Klaipėda District welcomes everyone to discover the four waters land


Klaipėda district is located in the Western part of Lithuania by the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon. The Western part of the district lies within the coastal lowlands, while the Eastern part extends to the plateau of West Samogitia, reaching a height of 148 m on Žvaginiai mound. The district is crossed by one of the most beautiful rivers of Samogitia – the River Minija. The district includes an area of 133,59 ha. Has population of 49,279 inhabitants. The administrative centre is Gargždai town. Gargždai is just 18 km away from Klaipėda city, the only one Lithuanias ice-free harbour. Klaipėda district is composed of 11 elderships.

In ethnic terms, Klaipėda district is an exception; it is nearly divided into halves by historical and cultural heritage of two Lithuanian ethnic groups, i.e. Lithuanians of Lithuania Minor and Samogitian of Lithuania Major. Persistent ethnic and cultural differences between Minor and Major Lithuania that are remarkably visible while travelling across Klaipėda district. It has 439 cultural objects. The most popular and the most interesting cultural tourism objects are Ablinga Memorial, the Channel of King Wilhelm, Lankupiai Lock, Evangelic Lutheran Church of Vanagai, ensamble of former Vėžaičiai Manor, Agluonėnai, Vanagai, Veiviržėnai town-ships and Gargždai town, old fisherman’s villages in Dreverna and Karklė.

There are several natural complexes in Klaipėda district where all of the region’s natural valuables are concentrated. In the district there is plentiful of rivers, ichthyologic reservations. The seaside zone has unique nature which is seen very well at the Seaside Regional Park. In the park territory tourists can visit the hill and the scar of the Olandų Kepurė (Dutchman’s Cap), bird watching hut by the Plocis Lake, educational cognitive pathes, white and grey dunes, wintering birds places of EU significance, the Second World War defense complex, ethnographical Karklė village and etc.

At the Baltic Sea are very popular recreational fishing, diving, windsurfing and kite surfing. Windsurfing and kite surfing with power kites are the most popular activities in the Curonian Lagoon. Kite surfing takes place along Dreverna and Svencelė villages. A nice tradition became Power Kite Competition which is the biggest surfer’s event in the Baltic countries.

Gargždai Tourism Information Centre is proud to present the new water rout in the largest west Samogitian River Minija, the 7th largest River of Lithuania. The length of the route is 180 km and the rout lasts nearly 7 days. During this sailing, the tourists will have a magnificent opportunity to discover a picturesque landscape of River Minija; its flora and fauna, to see old Samogitian villages and townships with a spirit of the past will be able to try our national food and drinks.

Ones, who will choose this route and explore Klaipėda district in that way, will have a chance to find and to get much entertainment, which will be offered by hospitable owners of the countryside farmsteads.

Sailing route along the Minija River could be divided into two parts:

1. Raguviškiai – Gargždai (the length of the route – 20 km, lasts 1 day, no night stay needed).

2. Raguviškiai – Minija village (the length of the route – 120 km, lasts 3 days including overnight stays and camping).

The tourists are able to choose an individual route. The route can be maid by water tourism specialists and professional scalars. They provide all necessary equipment as well.


Every single year in Klaipėda district is held traditional water tourism event The Minija River Lower Reaches Regatta, which is going to be held in August 2010. Advanced regatta’s program:

1. The first day: sailing from Gargždai town to Gedminai village. Sail equipment – canoes and kayaks.

2. The second day: water tourism sport event on the Minija River and various attractions at the campsite.

We are very proud about our new quay in Dreverna village which was established in 2008 using EU financial support. From Dreverna quay now is easy to explore Curonian Lagoon, to reach the next shore which are called "the nature pearl of Lithuania" - unique Curonian Spit, very romantic and cozy Juodkrantė township as well. You need just to book a boat trip from local enterprisers. If you are fisherman in your soul please enjoy yourself by recreational fishing in the Curonian Lagoon from the boat.


The best way to explore Klaipėda district is not just by water but also by car or by bicycle. There are made plenty of routs around the district and along whole seaside zone. The most attractive routs go’s along the coast of Klaipėda Region.

The Western Lithuania Klaipėda region tourist track Curonian way is foreseen for the promotion of car and bicycle tourism for educational purposes. Riding from Latvian-Lithuanian border southward to the Old Minija River mouth tourists will visit 27 parking lots which are in the area that has still retained elements of Western Lithuanian history, traditions and nature.

There are prepared new cycling route The Lithuanian Seaside Cycle Route which will lead tourists along the cycling trails of the Lithuanian Baltic Sea coast. The route has got all cycle traffic signs. The Route heads along the 100 km from Latvia-Lithuania border up to Russia in the South. In the Klaipėda district cycling route go’s through so-called “Lithuania Minor”.

Tourists will easily get know with this land of four waters by travelling across vicinities, having holidays in countryside tourism farmsteads, visiting cultural, nature objects and towns.
