About the museum
The museum was established in 1979 after the death of the writer I. Simonaitytė in her summerhouse in Priekulė. In the beginning the museum was a branch of the Lithuanian Literature Museum and later became a branch of Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum. After repairs the museum was opened to the visitors on 6 July 1984. Since 1990 the museum has been a cultural institution of Klapėda Region Municipality.
The basis of activities of the museum as of a cultural institution is to compile, preserve and in various ways promote the literary heritage of the writer I. Simonaitytė – the chronicler of the Lithuania Minor. One of the latest directions of the museum activities is to enshrine the traditions of our Klaipėda region.
In the museum visitors may get familiar with an authentic fully retained living environment of The writer in Priekulė in 1961 – 1978. All belongings of the writer have remained in the memorial rooms: furniture, dishes, and paintings. There are all Priekulė home library books of the writer in a book cabinet, first authentic editions of I. Simonaitytė books, photos, some documents, some personal belongings of the writer, such as typewriter, fountain-pens, and glasses.
The museum organizes various events: commemorations of the writer’s birthdays and other memorable dates, meetings with winners of I. Simonaitytė literary awards, book presentations, European Museum Nights.
Over more that thirty years of the museum activities, the museum was visited by people from Lithuania and other countries such as Germany, Canada, Spain, Japan, Norway, Latvia, Australia, Armenia, Russia, Moldova, Sweden, USA, Switzerland, Poland, Slovakia, France, and Holland.
